Crestor (rosuvastatin) is a prescription medicine used to lower cholesterol levels in patients with high cholesterol, or high cholesterol and low levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. It belongs to a group of drugs known as statins. These drugs work by reducing LDL cholesterol, which is an important lipid parameter in the body. Crestor is a generic version of Lipitor (atorvastatin) which is the brand name of the drug rosuvastatin. The drug rosuvastatin works by inhibiting the enzyme that makes LDL particles. This enzyme makes lipids in the blood stick to the lipid membranes of the blood vessels, preventing them from getting trapped in the walls of the blood vessels. The cholesterol in the blood is then reduced to LDL (bad) or “good” cholesterol. Crestor is used for the treatment of primary hypercholesterolaemia (high cholesterol).
